CMHA TVAMHS recognizes Eating Disorders Awareness Week
Jan 31, 2024
This week marks National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, a time dedicated to raising awareness and understanding about eating disorders. CMHA Thames Valley Addiction & Mental Health Services is committed to supporting everyone who may be struggling with these complex conditions.
Eating disorders are serious mental health concern that can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background. They are not choices, but rather conditions that require understanding, compassion, and professional care. Our aim during this week is not only to shed light on these disorders but also to foster a supportive community where anyone affected feels safe and encouraged to seek help.
Our Eating disorders program is a partnership initiative with the London Health Science Centre’s Adult Eating Disorders Service (AEDS), this service has been developed to meet the needs of adults who require treatment for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and eating disorders not otherwise specified.
We offer a range of services and resources designed to assist in the journey towards recovery and well-being:
Outpatient services
Focuses on providing treatment to individuals with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, ARFID, and otherwise specified feeding or eating disorders.
Virtual Day Treatment Services (DTS)
Involves individual and group based treatment for those who are experiencing eating disorders. The DTS can be accessed by residents of Ontario.
Those attending the DTS work with a multidisciplinary team and participate in programming that follows a cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) approach. The aim of treatment is to normalize eating, reduce and stop eating disorder related behaviours, facilitate weight restoration (as needed), and to improve participants’ quality of life.
Eating Disorders Residence
Program is a voluntary 8-bed residence, designed specifically for adults diagnosed with eating disorders who require 24-hour support to manage their symptoms.
We also recognize the importance of education in combating the stigma often associated with eating disorders. We encourage everyone to learn more, engage in open conversations, and extend support to those around them. Awareness and understanding are key steps towards a community where everyone feels valued and supported.
If you or someone you know is experiencing an eating disorder, please remember that help is available. You are not alone in this journey. Together, we can work towards healing and resilience.
Let’s stand together in support and awareness during National Eating Disorders Awareness Week.
